when i got my engine rebuilt they asked me what colour i wanted the engine!! i said red as my car is red but they said that red either fades quick or looks crap and needs lots of coats! so ended up getting black

I'd go with red, simply because black just looks like any other engine... black with dirt. You want it to stand out a bit, my opinion anyways

You don't need to use the expensive engine paints on the block.
Hammerite or 'Leyland' ( more or less any Oil based paint ) will do.

I did my block in Hammerite and it looks fine.
Same goes for calipers and drums, you can use Hammerite and 'Leyland' paint for those too.

If you want to paint the bits that get really hot though, Exhaust manifold etc.. Then get the special paints for that.

Jason.
