Firstly it is only possible to install 8s if you have electric windows because the complete speaker unit gets in the way of the space where the handle turns. It is however possible to fit 6x9s into a door with normal winders.
In order to fit any of the above speakers you need to remove the storage pockets on the bottom of the doors. There is also the option of putting more than one speaker in the doors.
To fit 8" speakers requires some cutting of the door with a jigsaw. Fitting 6x9s does not require any cutting of the doors. It helps to put some sound deadening material on the inside of the door skin.
Installing 8" Speakers
Step 1
Start by removing the door card and take the pocket off the bottom, take any old speakers out of the doors.
Step 2
Make a mounting template of the speaker you wish to fit out of some cardboard. The speaker should come with dimensions for the mounting hole. Using the template, sight a place on the door card where the original speaker grille thing is. The outside edge of the template must be about 2cm away from the edge of the door this stops the speaker getting in the way of the window mechanism.Use the centre of the original grille as a guide for the centre of the new one although this is not critical.
Step 3
When you are happy with where the circle is going to be, draw around the inside of the template with a marker onto the door card. Cut out the circle with a stanley knife or a jigsaw. Clip the door card back onto the door but don't bother with the screws yet.
Step 4
Look through the hole you have just cut in the door. Make extra sure that the edges of the circle are not near the window mechanism. If you measured up well the hole that the original speaker went in will be roughly in the centre of the new hole in the door card. When you are happy with the position draw around the inside of the circle on the door card onto the door.
Step 5
Remove the door card again. Cut out the circle on the door with a jigsaw fitted with a metal cutting blade, file the edges of the hole when you have done this.
Step 6
Next you need to make a pod for the speaker. Get some 18mm MDF or chipboard for this. Use the template to draw a circle on the wood. Measure the size of the speaker basket and draw another circle around the outside of the first about 4cm bigger than the basket. Cut out both circles with a jigsaw so you are left with a ring, the speaker should fit inside. Sandpaper the whole thing until smooth.
Step 7
The ring can now be either covered with carpet or vinyl or sprayed any colour you like. Make sure that the ring is very smooth if you plan to paint or vinyl it, it doesn't matter so much if you use carpet.
Step 8
Line up the inside of the ring with the hole in the door card. Screw door card to the ring from the back this way you don't see any screws from the front. Put a wire for the speaker through the grommet in the door and leave it inside the door for now. Put the door card back on the door and screw it up.
Step 9
Look through the ring, if you have measured right there should be a perfect hole through into the inside of the door. Wire up the speaker and screw it to the ring. Admire your new front speakers!
Installing 6x9 Speakers
Fitting 6x9s is easier than fitting 8s as you dont have to cut the door
Step 1
Remove the door card and you will see that there is a long eliptical shaped hole along the length of the bottom of the door, the speaker can be fitted length ways on the bottom of the door anywhere in this hole.
Step 2
Make a pod for the speaker as described above only in a 6x9 shape. Cut the hole in the door card anywhere that lines up with the long hole in the door, make sure that when the door is closed that the speaker will not be pushed into the seats before you decide where.
Step 3
Follow the instructions for fitting a round speaker more or less for the rest.
